Muy interesante el artículo de Wired: How Apple Got Everything Right By Doing Everything Wrong que resume de forma bastante exacta mi punto de vista de la famosa compañía de la manzana. Algunos extractos que me parecieron curiosos o graciosos (las marcas en negrita son mías)

But there is one Mercedes that doesn’t need to search for very long, and it belongs to Steve Jobs. If there’s no easy-to-find spot and he’s in a hurry, Jobs has been known to pull up to Apple’s front entrance and park in a handicapped space. (Sometimes he takes up two spaces.) (Ironically, it was the labels themselves that insisted on the DRM that confines iTunes purchases to the iPod, and that they now protest.)

Realmente yo habría añadido a la última negrita: “y os está bien merecido,” por no decir otras cosas.

Ayer vi la presentación del nuevo SDK para el iPhone, y la verdad es que me ha dejado un sabor de boca agridulce. Apple ya debe tener un API más o menos cerrado y ahora deja a la gente hacer programas, todo esto fantástico. El problema es la forma en que lo ha hecho, si no eres una compañía, realmente no es que sea una forma muy acogedora de comenzar a programar.

Y es que tengo la impresión de que Apple está haciendo lo mismo que hace Symbian, bueno, realmente lo llevan un paso más allá, en vez de requerir un certificado para tu aplicación, en Apple además te exigen que la vendas y/o distribuyas a través de iTunes. Pero, y este es un gran pero, pagando, si quieres desarrollar para el iPhone, pagas 99 dólares (bueno, ahora mismo solamente la gente de Estados Unidos lo puede hacer, al resto del mundo le toca esperar). De un plumazo la gente de Apple le han dicho a la cantidad de gente que ha estado desarrollando aplicaciones para el iPhone sin su “permiso” que se vayan a otro lado o paguen (obviamente la opción de jailbreak siempre quedará ahí). Un montón de aplicaciones útiles que probablemente no estarán ahí.

El motivo de por qué Apple quiere hacer esto es simple, control. De esta forma se aseguran de que nadie cree una aplicación maligna. De esta forma se aseguran de que no les llegan montones de aplicaciones de un montón de gente y tener que revisarlas una a una. Y ya de paso, si la aplicación es comercial se sacan un pellizco. Por que un 30% del precio final de una aplicación, es dinero…

Realmente, solamente hay un sistema que invita a desarrollar, que parece que te dejan hacer lo que te de la gana sin poner más trabas que las que puedan que sean necesarias, Google Android. Cualquiera es bienvenido a él, cualquiera puede desarrollar para él. Obviamente quedará ver que harán los fabricantes de teléfonos móviles que lo integren.

Simplemente unas ideas, con tanta licencia para comprar certificados y demás, parece que realmente si te pones a programar aplicaciones para dispositivos móviles es por negocio, no por diversión o para hacer más rico el sistema del open source, que tal como dijo Steve Jobs

“This is international, but not an open-source project. It’s a for-profit project only, even though it’s a free update.”

Bitácora Móvil: Primeras impresiones sobre la SDK del iPhone

El otro día tuve la oportunidad de jugar con el iPod Touch de una amiga, y el cacharrín me impresionó bastante. Desde luego Apple ha creado uno de los mejores -tal vez el mejor- sistema operativo para dispositivos móviles. La facilidad de uso, la respuesta, le saca colores a cualquier otro dispositivo móvil que he probado hasta el momento, y no han sido pocos.

La velocidad del navegador web Safari me gustó, y no hablo de velocidad de renderizado -que era rápida,- sino la que te permite una vez cargada la página moverte por ella o hacer zoom. Realmente es la mejor experiencia en un dispositivo móvil que he tenido mientras navegaba por la web, se notan esos 600 MHz de procesador. De todas formas encontré el efecto de girar la pantalla al girar el iPod Touch con el acelerómetro un poco tozudo a veces. Supongo que será cogerle el truquillo al giro de muñeca.

El iPod Touch había sido hackeado, y tenía una gran cantidad de aplicaciones de lo más interesante instaladas -más sobre aplicaciones y recientes anunciados SDKs en otra entrada que escribiré más adelante.- Realmente las aplicaciones de serie que trae el dispositivo son funcionales e interesantes (sincronización iCal, Safari…), pero donde pasa de ser un reproductor de música con navegador web a algo extremadamente útil, es cuando lo tienes hackeado, sino, no tiene tanta gracia.

Un detalle que me he fijado y a lo mejor me estoy equivocando de plano por que solamente he jugado unos segundos con él, es que no es “estrictamente” multitarea. Por pasos, obviamente el sistema operativo es multitarea, esta basado en Mac OS X con su núcleo Unix, un sistema operativo multitarea con todas las de la ley. El asunto es que no ha visto forma de tener dos aplicaciones abiertas. Por ejemplo, estoy introduciendo una nota en el editor de notas, pulso el botón inicio y me voy al Safari, consulto cualquier página web, vuelvo a pulsar inicio para regresar al editor de notas y este aparece como una pantalla en blanco sin la nota que estaba editando antes. Pero bueno, a lo mejor me estoy confundiendo, y era yo el que estaba haciendo algo mal. (Y mientras escribía esto me estaba acordando que no se puede copiar y pegar, así que tampoco puede que sea una utilidad que se eche de menos, eso de cambiar entre dos aplicaciones abiertas para compartir datos entre ellas).

Cuando substituya a mi iPod de 80 GB, será por uno de estos iPod Touch casi seguro (a no ser que encuentre algo mejor de aquí al año que viene), espero que para un modelo con 64 GB de memoria, teniendo en cuenta como esta bajando, espero que ya esten disponibles. Como conclusión, un dispositivo impresionante, con un sistema que responde al momento, pero que para hacerlo interesante, hay que hackearlo (y sí, esto después de que Apple anunciase ayer el SDK).

Aunque Apple estuviese presentando el producto más aburrido del mercado, siempre es divertido escuchar las retransmisiones de Engadget

Sí con el Mac OS X 10.5.2 podía poner de una vez por todas la barra de menú no transparente, algo que nunca entendí como se le ocurrió en Apple que podría llegar ser útil para el usuario. Ahora, con Dock Enhancer, puedo hacer el Dock ocupe un pelín menos de espacio con la misma funcionalidad. Vamos, como debió ser desde el principio.

Many consider Apple to be a leader in the computing world, but in many ways it is an attentive follower. Apple hasn’t historically been the first to introduce a new type of device, but rather a company that looks at where others have done poorly and attempts to do better. Apple didn’t invent the ultra portable, but with the MacBook Air it’s attempting to do it right.

The all aluminum exterior also means that it’ll always shock me after going through airport security, just like my MacBook Pro - great; it’s a small price to pay for a sturdy system.

The MacBook Air uses a 65nm Merom based mobile Core 2 Duo CPU running at 1.6GHz. For an extra $300 you can upgrade the chip to a 1.8GHz part (note that Intel only charges Apple an extra $32 for the faster CPU).

Obviously you can continue to use the MacBook Air as long as you’d like, but be aware of its planned obsolescence. The lack of memory slots is quite possibly the biggest issue, especially as applications grow in size. I remember reviewing the first Mac mini and complaining about not having 512MB of memory standard; these days 2GB is my sweet spot for OS X, and luckily Apple has outfitted the Air with just that. It’ll be another year or two before 4GB is the minimum smooth requirement for a decent OS X machine, but when that rolls around you’re out of luck with the Air.

Don’t buy this notebook if you’re not comfortable with having to buy a new one in another year or two. For the target market with the sort of disposable income necessary for such a habit, it’s not a terrible commitment.

During normal use the Air gets warm but not too uncomfortable to use on your lap. If you’re doing more than just typing/browsing with it, the system can get too warm to use on your lap. It definitely got there for me a few times while putting together this article, but it may vary depending on your tolerance for heat on your lap (and your desire to become infertile).

Part of the problem with the MacBook Air is that it’s designed for a world that doesn’t exist yet. Wi-Fi access just isn’t ubiquitous, you need to rely on a combination of Ethernet, WiFi and a 3G modem if you really want connectivity.

Tristemente hace muchísimo tiempo que no escucho podcasts, por lo que pensaba que Apple ya habría solucionado este problema con iTunes

The iPod is a marvelously well-designed product. But one of the things about it that really irritates me is the way it handles podcasts. If I’m halfway through listening to one, and I plug the iPod in to download new ones, it will remove the half-listened-to podcast from the iPod. This is so obviously the wrong behavior, and should be so easy to fix, that I find it amazing that no one at Apple has done so. It’s a shame that iTunes isn’t an open source project, because this seems like the sort of thing a competent hacker could find and fix in a weekend if she had access to the source code.

The Technology Liberation Front: Gripe.

The iPhone platform elegantly solves the design problem of small screens by greatly intensifying the information resolution of each displayed page. Small screens, as on traditional cell phones, show very little information per screen, which in turn leads to deep hierarchies of stacked-up thin information–too often leaving users with “Where am I?” puzzles. Better to have users looking over material adjacent in space rather than stacked in time.
